Gas Carriers

Gas carriers are highly specialized vessels designed for the safe transport of gases in liquefied or pressurized form. Unlike conventional cargo ships that carry packaged or dry bulk goods, gas carriers handle cargoes that are extremely sensitive to temperature, pressure, and containment integrity. This makes them one of the most technically advanced ship types in the global maritime industry. Our gas carrier design work focuses on four primary vessel categories: LNG carriers, LPG carriers, CO₂ carriers, and ethane carriers. While each vessel serves a different segment of the energy and industrial supply chain, they all rely on shared principles of cryogenic engineering, pressure containment, and advanced hydrodynamic optimization.

LNG Carriers

LNG carrier vessels are the most complex and high-value gas carriers in commercial shipping. They are designed to transport liquefied natural gas at approximately -162°C, a temperature at which methane becomes a liquid and can be transported efficiently across oceans.

The key engineering challenge in LNG carrier design is maintaining cargo stability at cryogenic temperatures while minimizing energy losses through boil-off gas. Modern LNG carriers use advanced insulation systems, specialized containment technologies such as membrane tanks, and optimized hull forms to ensure long-distance efficiency and safety.

From a design perspective, LNG carriers require a tight integration of structural engineering, thermodynamics, and propulsion system optimization. Many modern vessels also incorporate boiloff gas utilization systems, allowing the evaporated gas to be reused as fuel, significantly improving operational efficiency.

LPG Carriers

LPG carrier transport liquefied petroleum gases such as propane and butane. Compared to LNG carriers, they operate under less extreme cryogenic conditions, but they introduce their own engineering complexity due to the need for pressurized or semi-refrigerated containment systems.

These vessels are typically designed with flexible cargo handling systems, allowing them to carry different gas mixtures depending on market demand. Cargo tanks must be engineered to withstand pressure variations while maintaining strict safety margins, especially during loading and unloading operations.

LPG carrier design emphasizes operational versatility, efficient port turnaround, and compatibility with a wide range of global terminal infrastructure.

CO₂ Carriers

CO2 carrier vessels are an emerging class of gas carriers developed in response to global carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) initiatives. These ships are designed to transport liquefied carbon dioxide, typically in a dense phase under controlled pressure and temperature conditions. The engineering challenge in CO₂ carrier design lies in maintaining phase stability. CO₂ can shift between gas, liquid, and solid states depending on pressure and temperature, so containment systems must be carefully designed to avoid operational risks such as dry ice formation or pressure instability. These vessels are expected to play a key role in future decarbonization infrastructure, linking industrial emitters with offshore or geological storage sites.
